Type Of Prisoners & Prisons
Types of PrisonersCategory A Prisoners whose escape would be highly dangerous to the public or the police or the security of the state, no matter how unlikely that escape might be, and for whom the aim must be to make escape impossible.
Category B Prisoners for whom the very highest conditions of security are not necessary, but for whom escape must be made very difficult.
Category C Prisoners who cannot be trusted in open conditions, but who do not have the resources and will to make a determined escape attempt.
Category D Prisoners who can be reasonably trusted in open conditions
This Categorization of Prisoners takes place on them entering a Prison and upon receiving a sentence.
This Categorization of Prisoners is subject to review and be re-assed will lead to a Prisoner being moved to a lesser restrictive regime and in due course to an open prison. It is only a Cat D prisoner or has attained this status will be allowed into an Open Prison which in turn will allow for Home Leaves, Town visits, working outside the Prison and attending external colleges.
All prisoners have to be provided with course which will help them move down the category ladder, if not we are in a position to challenge any failure to provide the courses.
Category of Prisons
On the whole there five categories of prisons in this country:
- High Security Prisons for High Security Prisoners.
- Local prisons for remand and short-term prisoners who then are dispersed, also known as dispersal prisons.
- Prisons for those serving long-term sentences that do not need the highest security.
- Semi open Prisons also known as Category C prisons, which are closed but regimes are more relaxed.
- Open prisons for low risk Category D prisoners who pose little or no risk to the public or danger of escaping.
